Typographical exploration of transforming letters into images, integrating visual and verbal meaning.
Target: Children 3+
Self initiated project while studying at London College of Communication.
Which is the most effective way of teaching the alphabet to kids? Developing this ABC project I have found some answers to this question through the semiotic theories.
This self-initiative project aims to communicate through the visual form of the typeface. Words that are given visual form become images as well as continuing to carry verbal meaning. This dual nature of typography is a powerful force of communication.
The typographical exploration of transforming letters into images and integrating visual and verbal meaning was developed through different media, however for the final outcome I decided that photography was the one that better suited my aim.
Outcome and prototype:The outcome includes 28 cards, one for each letter of the alphabet plus two introductory cards. Each type visually incorporates an object as well as the first letter of its corresponding noun in English.
After a deep exploration of different formats, packaging and visualization of the possible ways to interact and play with this project, I designed the final outcome as a set of cards inside a box.The cards are in a loose format to allow children to learn the sequence of the alphabet and play with it to form words or sequences of images.
